Strawberries and Cream
....a simple, heavenly dessert!

How can a dish so simple as strawberries and cream be so wickedly satisfying? It takes only moments to prepare and yet is so universally adored that it would'nt be out of place as the dessert course to finish a fine, gourmet meal.

It is equally at home (and some would say more so) as part of a glorious, lazy summer picnic or casual barbecue party. But do keep the strawberries out of direct sunlight and keep the cream cool in a chiller bag or box. Served with a bottle of well chilled, dry champagne, what could be more decadent!

Whenever possible, try to buy the very best, locally grown strawberries available. If they have been imported long distance, they will generally not have such a memorable flavor and texture.

Gourmet food........the EASY way!

Dreamy Strawberries and Cream

INGREDIENTS
Serves 4

1lb/400g fresh strawberries
½ pint/300ml whipping cream
1 - 2 tablespoons rosewater
2 tablespoon fine white sugar

METHOD

  • Begin by gently washing the strawberries in cold water leaving the stalks in place. Shake off the excess water using a colander.

  • Place the strawberries in a large bowl and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar over. Toss very gently.

  • Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the cream and whip lightly to the soft peak stage. Fold through the rosewater.

  • To serve, pile the strawberries into attractive serving bowls (sundae glasses are perfect) and pile some whipped cream on top. Decorate with a strawberry on top of the cream.

Cook's Note
You may prefer to flavor the cream with the seeds from a vanilla pod, or ½ teaspoon vanilla extract instead of the orange rosewater. This is known as Créme Chantilly.

Strawberries and whipped cream make a perfect ending to a romantic meal for two as they are considered by many to contain aphrodisiac qualities!
