How to Hire a Butler
for your next
Important Party or Event

Butler holding a tray

For your next important dinner or lunch party, why not hire a butler for the occasion?

There are many agencies and organisations that will provide a professionally trained butler for a one off event. This will truly impress your guests, ensure maximum efficiency…………and allow you to relax and enjoy the party!

Tips on How to Hire a Butler

  • Use a REPUTABLE agency or established service whenever possible. Alternatively, if you are hiring a butler privately, insist on seeing references.

  • Always arrange to meet the Butler before the event. This gives you both the opportunity to become familiar with each other, as well as to plan the event and show him/her the layout of your home.

  • Decide on exactly what duties you want the butler to perform, and for how many hours.

  • How would you like the butler to be dressed? For a very formal affair, black tie, tails and white gloves may be appropriate. For a less formal affair, a black lounge suit or evening suit (tuxedo) may be more suitable.

  • How do you wish to be addressed by the Butler and his/her staff?

  • Will you be hiring a Personal Chef or Caterer? Some Butlers are also trained chefs, and may be able to cook AND serve for more intimate dinner parties of 6 guests or less.

  • Provide the butler with a written guest list and details of any V.I.P's and particular preferences or individual guest requirements.

How Many Staff will I Need?

  • If you plan to hire a Butler, I would recommend that you allow him/her to use his/her own staff. That way you will have a far more efficient team.

  • Generally, I would expect the Butler to greet the guests as they arrive, take their hats and coats, introduce them to the host & hostess or if it's a more formal occasion, announce them to the entire room.

  • At this stage, you will need an adequate number of waiting staff to serve drinks and perhaps appetisers or canapés. As a guide, allow 1 member of staff per 20 guests for a drinks party or cocktail reception.

  • If you are serving a sit down lunch or dinner, then you should allow 1 member of serving staff per 8 guests. On such an occasion, the Butler will supervise the waiting staff as well as serve the wines and any other beverages.

A Final Word of Advice

You may at first think it somewhat extravagant to hire a butler for your party! Believe me when I say that a good Butler is worth his/her weight in gold! They will always add a touch of style and quiet efficiency which will guarantee your peace of mind......and allow you to relax and enjoy the occasion!
